A Sketch of Venetian History is a work of poetic, artistic non-fiction, which weaves together art, ecology, travel and history. Featuring over 80+ delicate, hand-drawn, fantastical, ink illustrations, which illuminate the history of the Venetian Republic from its inception through centuries of resilience. A beautiful work for curious travelers and lovers of Venetian culture.
A Sketch of Venetian History ties many of Sarah's travels throughout the Republic, as well as its influences in Alexandria, Istanbul, Greece, Croatia and India. After sipping the glacial streams of the lagoon's feeding rivers, sampling citrus from historic reserves on the cliffs of Lake Garda, and sleeping under olive grooves in the Ionian islands, she was completely inspired. Sarah continued on to Florence to see Galileo's original spyglasses, to Bologna to see the Republic's innovative Anatomy Theatre, and returned to the city of Venice again and again to learn from modern printmaking and glassblowing maestros. Through her research, she created a series of detailed writings and delightfully illuminates this magical city's history for others.
