Sarah Pierroz is a Canadian artist and international educator. She moved to work in Egypt ten years ago and then to Italy, at the United World College of the Adriatic. She is now based out of South East Asia. She has travelled much of Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Europe. Her work has been exhibited at a number of group shows in Italy and Canada and is in private collections worldwide.

Much of Sarah's art explores the subtle sense of movement within the body and landscapes. Her series of yoga paintings are inspired by her studies in India. They are made with the intent to help communities in Nepal affected by the 2015 earthquake, and continued efforts afterwards. She was fortunate enough to make Artlift's first substantial contribution, in person this past Spring.

Samahita Yoga Retreat

Yoga & Drawing: “The Art of Observation”

October 7-14, 2017, Koh Samui, Thailand.

With Sarah Pierroz

About the Retreat

Come and cultivate an experience of peaceful expression! Samahita Retreat’s yoga instructor and artist Sarah Pierroz would like to invite you to join a special week of yoga and creative drawing.

We will begin each day with contemplation, meditative techniques and focused breathwork in the Kaivalyadhama tradition, flowing into an Ashtanga Vinyasa class. We will tune into breath and move the body to explore the nature of motion and stillness within, with guided classes at the start of the week and then moving into assisted self practice. Open to all levels.

The afternoon sessions will be centered around different drawing techniques investigating motion and still-life studies. Drawing from observation, we will develop concentration, strengthen hand-eye coordination, investigate new ways of making lines and practice switching dominant hand tendencies. We will make studies from nature, local temple architectural scenes, a posed model, and by using our imagination. We will learn how to capture the essence of movement through contour, blind contour, gestural, and abstracted shape drawing techniques. Drawing paper, pencils and erasers will be provided: do bring your own watercolors, colored pencils, pens, camera, etc. to fuel your inspiration.

There will be plenty of time for your personal creative projects, relaxing by the pool or beach, with access to excellent detox and spa facilities and complimentary herbal steam room, and indulging in delicious, healthy Thai meals together. The retreat also includes optional early morning silent cycle classes, sunrise beach walks, excursions to the local night markets for shopping and street food, a boat and snorkeling trip, and time to explore the island.

The week’s classes will feature:

  • Meditation techniques and breath work
  • Guided yoga flow classes
  • Gentle movement sessions
  • Drawing classes, explorations and reflections

the cause

helping communities in Dhading, Nepal with earthquake relief efforts

Rajendra Subedee worked hard as a trekking guide and then eventually formed his own successful trekking company. Feeling compelled to make a difference, he decided to take in a few children from his home village of Dhaling, who were facing quite harsh conditions, and helped them get the education they needed to make their way in the world.

He started the Orphan and Children Education Association of New Nepal (OCEAN Nepal) in 2005, and after a time the government sent him more children to care for. The group operates a children's home in Kathmandu which supports education and provides loving care to over sixteen children.

Now, Rajendra's concern and passion are directed to the welfare of entire families in Dhading, his home community, levelled by the 2015 earthquake. Many people lost their homes and still live in makeshift remains of the housing they once had. His goals are to help rebuild the village's schools and community centres, and work for better shelter and medical care. He is also supporting single women in need.
